IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA FOR THE AMERICAN CRAFT COUNCIL SHOW! THIS YEAR MARKED THE 12TH YEAR I HAVE EXHIBITED IN THIS SHOW. IT HAS BECOME A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY!


BENCHMARK AWARD WINNER - 2013

THE ART IN THE HIGH DESERT SHOW, WHICH TAKES PLACE IN BEND, OREGON ALONG THE RENOWNED DESCHUTES RIVER IS ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SHOWS I HAVE EVER DONE. WINNING THIS AWARD WAS OF COURSE ELATING, BUT ALSO I WAS ABLE TO BASK IN THE PRESENCE OF MY DAUGHTER, GRANDDAUGHTER, AND GREAT GRANDSON, WHO CAME TO VISIT ME THERE. THIS AREA IS IN OUR BLOOD. THE OREGON HIGH DESERT HAS BONDED WITHIN EACH OF US AS AN IMBEDDED STONE OF BEAUTY AND POWER. WE ARE FRAGILE BRITTLE BRANCHES LYING UPON THAT STONE.


AT THE BELLEVUE ARTS MUSEUM ARTSFAIR 2012

THIS WAS AN EXCEPTIONALLY SUCCESSFUL SHOW AND WE PLAN TO RETURN NEXT YEAR. THE HOURS WERE A BRUTAL 12 HOURS PER DAY, BUT THE ATTENDANCE AND THE SUBSEQUENTIAL SALES, MADE THE TIME SPENT REWARDING, AND IF EXHAUSTING THEN EVEN GIDDY AND SOMETIMES GOOFY!


BEST IN SHOW - ART IN THE PEARL - 2011

WE WERE FORTUNATE TO WIN BEST IN SHOW AT OUR FIRST YEAR EXHIBITING IN THE ART IN THE PEARL FINE ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL, 2011. THE SHOW TAKES PLACE OVER LABOR DAY WEEK-END, THE FIRST WEEK OF SEPTEMBER, AND WE WERE ACCUSTOMED TO BEING AT THE SAUSALITO ART FESTIVAL IN CALIFORNIA DURING THAT WEEK-END. BUT, IT ONLY MADE SENSE THAT WE SHOULD TRY FOR ART IN THE PEARL, SINCE THE SHOW WAS PRACTICALLY IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD! WE HAVE NOT BEEN BACK TO SAUSALITO SINCE!

ON THE BEACH - Oregon Coast - 2011



GRAYSON MALONE

FROM STUDYING ART AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AT WOODBURY COLLEGE IN HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA AND AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON IN EUGENE, IN PREPARATION FOR A CAREER IN ARCHITECTURE, IT BECAME APPARENT TO ME THAT PERSUIT WOULD NOT MATERIALIZE, AT LEAST NOT IN THE FORM OF EVER BECOMING AN ARCHITECT. SO, WHILE I LONGED TO KEEP SOME FORM OF ART AND DESIGN ALIVE WHILE RAISING MY DAUGHTER, I SPENT HALF THE YEAR WORKING IN CONSTRUCTION AND THE OTHER HALF AS AN OIL PAINTER. I WAS ABLE, GRADUALLY TO BECOME ONE OF THE FIRST WOMEN (possibly even THE first, I have been told) GENERAL CONTRACTORS IN THE STATE OF OREGON. THAT BECAME A YEARS LONG DEPARTURE FROM DOING ANY FINE ART AT ALL.

WORKING EXTENSIVELY WITH ARCHITECTS AND OTHER DESIGNERS, I REGAINED INTEREST IN ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING AND BECAME A SPACE PLAN DESIGNER AND GENERAL CONTRACTOR. THIS EXPERIENCE PROVIDED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE IN THE USE OF CONCRETE WHICH EVENTUALLY METAMORPHOSED INTO FINE ART SCULPTURE AND SUBSEQUENTLY DEVELOPING A NEW MATERIAL I HAVE CALLED METAL-INFUSED CONCRETE.

I HAVE HAD SOLO EXHIBITIONS OF FINE ART PAINTINGS IN A NUMBER OF GALLERIES. A FEW OF WHICH ARE: THE GOLDEN LEGEND GALLERY IN LAKE OSWEGO, OREGON, THE COURTYARD GALLERY IN PORTLAND, OREGON, AND THE COAST GALLERY IN BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA.

MY SCULPTURAL WORK HAS BEEN SHOWN IN THE NOICE GALLERY IN KALISPELL, MONTANA, THE THREE RIVERS GALLERY IN MISSOULA, MONTANA, THE OFF-MARKET THEATRE GALLERY, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, THE SFMOMA ARTIST GALLERY, SAN FRANCISCO, THE CECILE MOOCHNEK GALLERY, BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA AND THE MOWEN-SOLINKSY GALLERY, NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA. I HAVE BEEN AFFILIATED WITH PRO ARTS IN OAKLAND AS WELL AS SF ARTWORK IN SAN FRANCISCO. I AM CURRENTLY (as of 2012)EXHIBITING WITH THE ROWBOAT GALLERY IN PACIFIC CITY, OREGON.

AS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF METAL-INFUSED CONCRETE, THE MEDIUM I HAVE BEEN IMMERSED IN FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS, I HAVE FOUND THE MOST FULFILLMENT OF SOUL BEYOND ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE EVER DONE. OVER A SPAN OF THREE DECADES, I DEVELOPED MANY TYPES OF CONCRETE MIXES, EACH WITH IT'S OWN SPECIAL PURPOSE, AS EACH PROJECT CALLED FOR DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS. I EXPERIMENTED EXTENSIVELY WITH COMBINATIONS OF TEXTURES BY EMPLOYING A WIDE VARIETY OF CASTING METHODS, HAND SCULPTING, AND GRINDING, AND POLISHING TECHNIQUES. CONCRETE HAS THE POTENTIAL OF INTEGRATING, OR HOSTING MANY OTHER MATERIALS, SO I HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THIS CHARACTERISTIC AND FOUND THAT WHAT IS COMBINED WITH THE CEMENT IN ITS DRY FORM, CAN BE AS REMARKABLE AS ANY EXTERNAL FEATURE OF THE PIECE.

FOR MANY YEARS, I WAS GREATLY INFLUENCED WITH THE STUDY OF WABI SABI, WHICH IS A JAPANESE PHILOSOPHY OF THE BEAUTY IN THE INTEGRATION AND DISINTEGRATION OF THINGS AND PLACES. I WAS, AND STILL AM, IMPRESSED THAT NOTHING IS STATIC AND THAT ALL THINGS ARE IN A STATE OF TRANSITION FROM BEGINNINGS TO ENDINGS. THERE IS CEREMONY IN THIS PROCESS, AND I AM AWARE THAT MY ART CAN PAY TRIBUTE TO THE IMAGES OF CHANGE.
